REFLECTIONS: DEFINING DEMOCRACY (II) AS REFLECTIONS

In the previous post we adopted a stance "cynical" to conclude that democracy, understood as a certain state of affairs in which the "people" exercising "power" in a human society, there has been ever and, in fact, never exist in literal terms. However, although this view pessimistic is very necessary to take away illusions that get us nowhere, this does not mean that the notion of democracy does not serve us all. If so, all would like to live under the Franco regime in our (imperfect) current system and I doubt many people will be able to sustain that kind of fantasy. An excess of cynicism we can produce an indigestible mental pie. Of course, we may reject entirely the validity of the "concept" of "democracy." However, if you really want to make an intelligible discourse about social life, would have to invent some other "nice word", which inevitably end up "corrupted" in a similar way as has happened with "democracy." Then let's stay with the word "whole life" and see what we can get out of it that is of value.

If democracy tells us the real thing, but not literally true, we deconcluir that democracy is a myth. All the myths are true, in the sense of "authentic" but none of them is if we understand it literally . Remember the myth of Sisyphus, condemned by the gods to eternally carry a heavy rock to the top of a hill, when it reaches the top, the rock falls down and must start again from the beginning till the end of time . Poor Sisyphus no "there", but his story is an image that "does see" a hard truth expressible in a less poetic, but we could summarize the experience that we often our efforts are futile and useless. To take a trivial example, I myself continually embody this myth on the rare occasions when I order my office desk, the little eventually returns to form around the shambles. The myth becomes reality in its successive incarnations historical and at the same time, these real situations is where we draw the symbols and stories of our shared imagination, and explain the meaning (or meaninglessness) of everything we do.

"Democracy" is the myth of the Government of the People. This is a story that we can roll back to an idealized past or imagined (the Golden Age, the Good Old Days, the Greek polis) or a future impossible in literal terms (the New Jerusalem, communist society, anarchism, the United of Heaven). Meanwhile, still incarnate continuously in our present, every time we are capable of doing to people and to control or put at bay the Power ... Or perhaps this is just a tall tale that keeps the powerful fiddle while still sending? Then too, but Politeness does not courageous.

Myths can be the "opium of the people, but this must be first opium, and are able to poison the spirit is because we speak poetically of an" authentic "experience. Dive into the myth implies dive into the depths of our own "soul", personal or collective, for better or for worse. The journey can be rewarding or self-destructive. It depends. Some say that the Fund Pandora contained all the evils of land and other goods containing all, no way to know the truth, except by opening the box. The fact that the myth leads us depends on our own layout and the way in which we integrate into it. Everyone

segregate rationalizations about our lives that we serve as mechanisms of defense against an often hostile reality. Sometimes it works fantastically. But other times, depending on the situation, they become a burden that hinders our happiness. At the collective level of human societies something similar happens. All societies secrete a self-congratulatory speech that produces a daily certainty and allows minimal social cohesion. However, this "ideology" often becomes a burden for the transformation of society in order to overcome its own dysfunctions and contradictions. "Our democracy is the least bad of the possible systems and have to settle for what is, without looking for something else", "democracy is going to vote," we must obey the laws because we have done, " our leaders represent us because we voted. " Myths and images of democracy that exist in our society can "lull", killing what in us is "people" or "person" (and later we will play with the individual and collective) and making "mob" or "mass."

But it is also a fact that all the myths about democracy have provided a necessary impetus for the transformation of societies towards overcoming its contradictions in very different historical moments and in front of very different powers. Of course, the expected paradise never comes at all: in the new societies emerging new contradictions that make timely return to the use of the myth of democracy for the story to take its course.

Moreover, this role "positive" the myth of democracy does not only apply to the epic of the great social transformations, but which can also occur in the midst of reality drab everyday, giving sense to the little things we do, our little fights, the way we communicate in public life.

However, this notion of democracy as a myth "may still be too abstract to be operational. It helps us understand why we need to believe in democracy but not "exist" if we understand it as perfect realization of a "status quo" idealized, but does not give us the key when you dive into the myth helps us and hurts us when beyond that it is good that we literally it, because it lulls us or us to build societies monstrous tours by the fanatical belief in a utopia. In any case, something in the above description of the positive aspects of the myth that we may help serve, serving as a starting point for the notion of democracy that we propose in the following entry: democracy as a process.

Note: events: As everyone knows, we have been dead for nothing Don Marcelino Camacho, consistent person there ever was in the struggle for democracy and freedom. Rest in peace and Marx have in his beard.

Change Lock On Truck Toolbox

On October concerts and movies, my love for reading in English and some of Paty Cantú.

October was the month of events.

At least so far this year there was not a busy month with many days on weekends. In so far this month I've been to two bachelor parties and two concerts, and lack a wedding and possibly one more concert. Of the dismissed

there really is little to tell, next weekend Camel good home and were accompanied last weekend and the ancestor in his last holidays as a bachelor.

From concerts as I tell them I went to one last weekend and another ancestor.

The end just happened I was in the audience at the concert Banamex Enrique Bunbury, in his 2010 tour entitled "The Aftermath." The concert was very good. Excluding the reunion concert Heroes del Silencio for the second time I see Bunbury concert. The last occasion was at the Arena Monterrey, and this time in the Auditorium Banamex, but sitting away from the scene. On the one hand they tell you that the concert was very good, on the other, I must admit that I liked more the previous concert. Although I must be honest, I think this is due to two very personal reasons: 1) enjoy a concert more than being in court that being in a chair, and 2) Bunbury not sing "In the end ...". And there is nothing to do about either situation. Banamex Auditorium does not have a field area, and even paid for the most expensive ticket had been in an armchair. Respect the selection of songs, I understand that it is extremely difficult to sing all the songs that one expects to hear, even more when these are not simple or the most famous.

I leave you with a taste of the concert, not recorded by me, "The Stranger."

The other concert I attended was also held at the Auditorium Banamex was two weekends ago, and was the Panda concert, promoting her latest album. The latter disc is double and I have not heard much. Most of the material that was played at the concert was out of there, so I imagine how I spent in the concert. Only when they sang some songs from past albums enjoyed. In fact every time I enjoy the concert under Panda. I'm getting old, I guess.

I leave you with "The Malaventurados No Cry", just not recorded by me.

And those are the developments related to concerts and I guess that music in general.

I have not had a chance to go to the movies. The last movie I saw was several weeks ago, was "Hell" and I felt very good. What if I had had enough time doing was renting movies. These past weeks I rented three movies are very different and although the three I like. Although I notice, I think you should have a very peculiar mood to appreciate each one of them. I share the trailers, from highest to lowest, according to how much I enjoyed the film in question.

"Kick-Ass," released in Mexico with the stupid title "A superhero without superpowers.

"Chloe," released in our country with the bland name of "A Bold Proposal."

And finally, "She's out of my league ", known here as" Not in your dreams. "

And those are the three movies I've seen so far this month. As I said, with the proper mood, I think all three are quite enjoyable. And I think that the post also shows that those who put the title to the movies in Mexico are doing a lousy job.

Finally I tell them I went to the Fair Paper and unlike other years I bought one book. If I remember last year I bought two or three, and a year more. The trend can be traced back many years, when I went to the fair for several days and ended up buying a total of ten to fifteen books, or maybe more. The decrease in my purchase of books is due to several reasons. Most obviously, the stack of unread books that accumulates on my bookshelf. But more important than that, the reasons that affect my unwillingness to buy at the Book Fair is my love of reading in English and increasingly common habit of buying my books online.
buy online for one simple reason: it is cheaper. Explain why I prefer to read in English is a bit more complicated. You see, in general read a few books by English-speaking, even under Mexican authors. And although I appreciate Ibargüengoitia books, Augustine and others in general tend to read more recent European and Japanese authors.
In the case of authors who write in English I think it's obvious why I prefer to read in English. In the case of which is written in languages \u200b\u200bother than German, French, Japanese or other, the reason is also simple: it bothers me that the books are translated in English, focused to a English audience, and idioms that are only used in Spain.
And example is the only book I bought this year's Frankfurt Book Fair.

"A cry of love from the center of the world, known in English as" Socrates in Love "and written by Kyoichi Katayama Japanese, tells the story of Sakutaro and Aki, young Japanese living in Japan . My problem with translation is that I'm not used to book events are developed in Japan and the characters have names like Sakutaro and Ryonosuke, but use the terms "valid" and "have been" typical of English in Spain.

same, I'm doing everything possible to enjoy the book. I've been about 100 of the 196 pages of the book and hope to finish this week. It's a fairly light reading and I think just that explains its popularity. As I read is bestseller in Japan and when it was published in that country, in the early 90's, ousted the book that had the record for being the best selling, Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. Norwegian Wood in my opinion is much better, but as I said, this is a book shorter, lighter and generally easier to read. I was reminded of the reasons that I never read "bestsellers."

And now, I think is new, I send you a reminder of why I am fans of Paty Cantú.

Pull Start To Electric Start

MYTH: DEFINING DEMOCRACY (I) THE VISION OF THE CYNIC

" ... And I will not miss the words corrupted by use," said a song of Tahures Zurdos . It is true that our life is full of fine words and sound that both manipulate and use the same for a hole that for a disjointed, we have been prostituted and hollow. Perhaps we could say that love, art, freedom, solidarity and justice. Or, why not that other word pretty, democracy.

live happily ever after in a social and "democratic" law, but at other times during the Franco regime, we lived in a "democracy" organic, the Chinese, however, live in a republic "democratic" popular. Just as all people are themselves as "good people", all modern countries like to define themselves as "democratic." The word has been sparse, has become an attractive package that is often used as trim to hide the stark reality of power. Is it possible to better define the term to serve us something?

If we look at the etymology, democracy means "power of the People." And if we take this really seriously, paradoxically, it is normal to give us laughter, as Mafalda , possessed by a whirlwind of cynicism has ruled But when the People? Is not this really a contradiction in terms? Is not the fact the people of the governed?

Our "myth of origins" of democracy refers to ancient Athens , where certainly there was a highly participatory society. All "citizens" and not just the oligarchs, could intervene directly in public affairs that affect them through participation in the assembly and could run for public office . Our society has reached a degree of functional specialization and complexity that would be effectively impossible to maintain such direct involvement. So therefore somewhat enviable looks like a model. But who were the "citizens" who could participate in public affairs? A clear minority of the population, since women, slaves and metics (foreign immigrants) were excluded from citizenship. Could it be that they (they) were not Pueblo? Were not these people may Village than anyone, since they were excluded from, control of power? Beyond this, if you have participated in any meeting, be observed as they also flutters the power, more or less explicitly, or they can be manipulated by different forms of power or pressure. The The same goes, of course, public office, though a priori are available to "all" "citizens."

And if we refer to our modern democracies ? Currently women are entitled to vote and it is assumed that there are no slaves. Yes, we have several millions of foreign immigrants who are affected by the decisions of power, but have no ability to intervene in public affairs, finding himself become the subject of political debate rather than the subject of this discussion. But hey, we could say that at least the "citizenship" now covers the majority of the population. What is specific participation? Well, we do not have direct democracy. If any institution that tries to recreate in a more well testimonial (and say "testimonial" to seek a soft word not scandalize anyone.)

Indeed, as mentioned above, it would be impossible for us to participate directly in all decisions that affect us, because our society is too complex. Thus, by necessity, "delegate" a caste of "political" professionals who are actually wield political power. The theology of our political system tells us that the rules are "legitimate" because we have done. But one need not be very smart to realize that this is merely an idealized representation. Obviously, the rules other people have made on the basis of very diverse interests.

This reality is a manifestation of a general pattern identified by the sociologist Robert Mitchell, the iron Act oligarchy, which is to say that even in organizations that we call "democratic", in practice, the end always ends a minority rule. This happens in both the state and in the associations, political parties, unions or any grouping, at least when they reach a certain size.

some extent, this group of "political" operates as a true class leader, they are all social conditions of existence are very similar and therefore are aware of it or not, have common interests and some common ideology secreted by these interests, beyond the divisions tribal apparently separate. This is nothing new in the past as the various noble houses could be facing each other, but not stopped being a "class."

course, it is not logical or predictable that this group is going to legislate or rule against their class interests and here we already have a major limitation of the "people power." Of course, the "people" amorphous even if it is disorganized, has a certain capacity to influence public affairs. In basic terms this finding tanpoco seems a historical novelty. Roman policy also had to take into account the instincts of the people and so did the Polynesian chiefs or any other political system described by the historiography or ethnography. All the leaders seek to maintain a balance between their class interests and the need to keep the people happy and peaceful. Beyond repression and violence that is sometimes used excessive so, all power needs at least entitled to remain in day to day and that legitimate means at least a passive acceptance of governance.

As has always happened historically, the people can influence the course of the battles of the ruling class, but can only do so within established rules about preventing substantial changes. If a Polynesian chief acts as a Tyrant, is killed by the people and replaced by a Polynesian chief, but the system itself cazicazgo, and some assumptions on underlying this form of domination are generally uncontroversial. We, more "civilized" than the Polynesians, we can decide together every four years if it rules the PSOE or the PP, tribal groups who like emphasize their differences dressed with feathers of different colors. Well, all that the election is very good, and explain why, but in reality does not imply that laws are made by the people or the people whom it governs.

In fact, we know that there are other forms of pressure are more effective and influential than the mere consideration of the feelings of the crowd. Has the Village who has decided the last labor reform and recent welfare cuts? As the polls say, most people seem to disagree. In fact, our leaders were elected in recent elections had expressly promised that they would not to make labor reforms and welfare cuts regressive; few months before lowering the salaries of public sector workers had agreed on moderate wage increases, and in the context of economic crisis. And yet, at any given time, carry out certain policies "unpopular", changing his mind abruptly.

The Government has given the lurch just because it has been under pressure from powerful forces. I do not intend to exempt it from moral and political responsibility, each club that hold your candle. But sobering for the naive claim that in our country the people rule. " I have already told

discouraged. All that I'm counting This entry is the pessimistic view of the cynical and sorry. A certain amount of cynicism can be just fine. It frees us from the vice of naivety. However, the cynical and the naive have a common flaw: they both covered only a part of reality. His vision is so partial and fragmented which can lead to counterproductive behavior. Mr. Mitchell, a brilliant sociologist, after compounding the iron law of oligarchy we have mentioned, ended up becoming a supporter of fascism. It seems that even thought that if democratic institutions are not really ends up being more popular that amorphous mass adoration that feels for the charismatic leader shift, the truth ends up confusing. Certainly, if any inhabitant of our little democratic state thinks that ultimately democracy is a lie and therefore everything goes well and nothing matters, I invite you to live a stint as a subject people in the democratic republic of China. You are going to remove all the stupid fast.

We live in another time that Robert Mitchells and we also have the risk that we really confused, but this risk manifests itself differently. Cynicism serves as an excuse for bloated again justified our idiocy (naive concern for our immediate interests and those of our family ignoring public life that really affect us) and ultimately to let everything go as it is. The roar of the politicians, because everyone steals a lot, stealing are all day, watching us let off steam with superiority and finally got used and everything that happens seems "normal." And if we can steal us, too, of course, do not they politicians? Or try to stick to their power to get cut. Thus, every time we get less people and increasingly we become more peat or mass. What may have died in our social life of democracy and the possibilities grow demagoguery.

One thing is to realize that people actually not rule never quite another we degrade ourselves in this way. To break this impasse, we have to stop literally believe in democracy as a situation or state of things and look at it differently. We will see in the next chapter of this exciting telenovela.

Milena's Free Galleries

on my future career as a teacher, lack of trips to the cinema and Paty Cantu

Talking with friends about the doctorate and issues arose the issue of uncertain prospects for the recently graduated doctors in administrative science. For my part I gave the answer appears to be the standard of PhD students when asked "How will you work when you finish your Ph.D.?" And that answer is "I like to combine teaching with consultancy." In that statement I replied with an unexpected comment, "you'd be good dog insurance as a teacher." The person who said I know very little, has agreed with me maybe 10 times. And it was this that got me thinking. After giving

some turned the matter I concluded that indeed, if I work as a teacher, surely will be "good dog."

Commenting on the issue with a fellow doctor came to the second conclusion, we are "dogs" to those students that we do not fall right, but that's another story. The doctorate is

, earrings accumulate and reading materials are endless. Send a proposal to a research conference to be held soon and I hope to be accepted. And let you know the results.

film I'd like to talk but sadly I could not go since the last time I wrote here. I learned that Jonah Hex, the most recent Megan Fox movie premiere in Mexico is not so I'll have to resort to DVD or the internet to see. I hope the premiere in Mexico Machete, Easy A and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows but I have no idea when it will arrive in Mexico. Machete and Easy For even I have no doubt that Mexicans come to theaters. Again, we must resort to the DVDs and the Internet.

And to finish and follow the format established by the blog (radically change the subject and include photos of women), talk a little about Paty Cantú. Paty Cantú

On the English wikipedia says he was born in Houston, Texas, while the English Wikipedia says it was in Guadalajara Jalisco. Both agree that it was on 25 November 1983 and his full name is Patricia Giovanna Cantu Velasco.

Contemporary and Guadalajara.

recorded two albums with LU and has two solo albums. The first single from his latest album is "Fortunately there is you." Is the share:
